The Irish War of Independence, Cogadh na Saoirse, or Anglo-Irish War was a guerrilla war fought from 1919 to 1921 between the Irish Republican Army and the British security forces in Ireland. A ceasefire in July 1921 resulted in Ireland being partitioned by the British, creating Northern Ireland. The Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, ending British rule in the rest of Ireland. The Irish Free State was created as a self-governing dominion, but in June 1922, disagreement among republicans over the Treaty led to the Irish Civil War. After eleven months, Irish Free State forces claimed victory and formed what later became the Republic of Ireland.
