Known to history as a man of action, befriended by both Cromwell and Charles II, Marvell has emerged from the literary shadows in recent years and is now regarded as the equal of Donne and Herbert. A convinced republican and libertarian, he wrote extensively about public affairs, most famously in the ‘Horatian Ode’, but his greatest poems – including ‘The Garden’ and ‘The Definition of Love’ – are lyrics as magnificent as any in the seventeenth century. This collection contains everything of importance, including several translations from Marvell’s Latin verse. Original spelling and punctuation have been retained.
